Speaker 1: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. There is a prize. Meat Eater will donate $ 500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing. I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Seth, Logan, Sarah, Alyssa, John, and Jen Pearson. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Meat Eaters for Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Meat Eater Trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light, head for the mountains. All right, Jen, first time on the show. Tell folks what you do here at Meat Eater.
00:00:44
Speaker 2: I am the Events and Marketing Operations Coordinator.
00:00:47
Speaker 1: Yeah, anytime you go to a really cool Meat Eater event and everything seems like it's running smooth and nothing is on fire, that's thanks to Jen.
00:00:56
Speaker 2: That's the hope.
00:00:57
Speaker 1: Does it just feel like that, that you're just trying to not have things on fire for these events?
00:01:01
Speaker 2: Yes, and a lot of cat herding.
00:01:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of cat herding with our crew. Jen, what are going to be your strengths and weaknesses at Meat Eater Trivia, hunting, fishing, conservation, cooking?
00:01:11
Speaker 2: I feel like mostly weaknesses.
00:01:13
Speaker 1: Okay, no strengths then.
00:01:16
Speaker 2: I don't know, we'll see. Maybe we'll surprise it, but there's a reason why this is my first time.
00:01:19
Speaker 1: All right, we'll find out how Jen does. Okay, we're starting today's show with a question for the crew. If you have a question you want the crew to answer, then send your question with a subject line mailbag to trivia at TheMeatEater.com. This is a good one. It's from Clayton. He says, I love sardines. The girls I work with, however, hate sardines. Specifically, they hate the smell when I eat them and apparently hate the smell that is left over when I put the empty can in our shared kitchen trash. I've tried to be reasonable. I started rinsing the can out thoroughly before throwing it away, but apparently that isn't good enough. They could still smell it and would let me know they were displeased. So lately, I've been gathering up all of my sardine evidence, can, packaging, napkins, whatever, and carrying it outside to the dumpster. This feels like a lot of effort, especially considering I am the executive director. At some point, should the executive director be allowed to throw a sardine can in the office trash? Am I bending over backwards for my coworkers? Should I go back to throwing my thoroughly rinsed sardine cans in the shared kitchen trash? Or have I created a precedent that that I now have to live with. What are our thoughts for Clayton?
00:02:30
Speaker 3: I hate the smell of sardines, but that is excessive. I feel like those people need to learn how to live with some discomfort in the workplace. That's a little extreme.
00:02:40
Speaker 2: I love tinned fish of all forms.
00:02:44
Speaker 4: I do think that when you're entering into an office environment, you're subscribing to a different social contract than the one that is at your house.
00:02:53
Speaker 3: Microwaving fish.
00:02:55
Speaker 4: Smelly stuff in the trash can like rinse them out have some have some community-minded behavior in your workplace.
00:03:03
Speaker 3: I think what are the thoughts yeah but like how how fragile are you that you can't like have some sort of minor discomfort for like some bad smells i mean well.
00:03:14
Speaker 5: Would you stick like a salmon fillet into the microwave upstairs no.
00:03:18
Speaker 3: But that's like That's intentionally, I don't know. It's him consuming sardines and then putting the trash in the garbage. I don't know. That just seems excessive that he needs to rinse it and bag it. Seth, what do you think?
00:03:30
Speaker 1: I don't know.
00:03:32
Speaker 6: I'd love to know the office setup. These people have doors to their offices and they can just shut the door?
00:03:38
Speaker 7: I don't know.
00:03:39
Speaker 2: That's what I was wondering.
00:03:40
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:03:41
Speaker 2: Does he have his own office?
00:03:42
Speaker 1: This is something that would probably.
00:03:45
Speaker 2: You'd think so.
00:03:45
Speaker 8: Windows.
00:03:46
Speaker 1: Yeah. HR, what do we think about this problem?
00:03:49
Speaker 7: Oh, wow. I think that some people have sensory issues. And so their smells are much more heightened than other smells. I'm not sure if that's the case here. But I always feel like you should just be a good human. And if it is offending a few other people, is it that big of a deal to walk outside and throw it away?
00:04:11
Speaker 3: Or just don't bring it.
00:04:12
Speaker 7: There's people who have allergies. You can't bring peanut butter. There's all sorts of different things. So just not that big of an inconvenience.
00:04:18
Speaker 1: One of the questions that Clayton asks, he says, am I bending over backwards for my coworkers? Yes, but that's also okay. Like, I assume you like these people you work with. You said you're the executive director. You want to be like a good executive director, right? So it's probably annoying to like hike that outside and throw it away. But I bet your coworkers will appreciate you more. It's probably worth like the minor inconvenience to just not have sardine stink in the office. Any other thoughts for Clayton? John, what kind of gross stuff do the store boys eat? Oh, everything. Sardines?
00:04:53
Speaker 9: I don't know if we ever had canned fish, but we also have a little basement, so we kind of like escape the sales floor. So it's kind of easy to ventilate a little bit, but I mean, we smell everything. We smell like hunters that just came in that just shot an elk.
00:05:08
Speaker 7: You? Yep.
00:05:09
Speaker 4: Yes, I did.
00:05:10
Speaker 6: I shot a bull last week.
00:05:11
Speaker 1: Congratulations.
00:05:12
Speaker 6: Thank you. Thank you.
00:05:13
Speaker 1: Thank you.
00:05:14
Speaker 9: But We have a whole kitchen set up. We've cooked venison, we've cooked elk, we've cooked salmon. All of us guys, we don't really say anything. We just shut the door to our downstairs kitchen where we have our lunch and cook. We have had some customers say, oh, it smells funky in here. We're like, oh, yeah, something's out in the street.
00:05:40
Speaker 6: None of you boys strike me as someone to be complaining about smells in the kitchen. No, no, no.
00:05:48
Speaker 1: Good luck with that one, Clayton. That's tough. It's too bad you like the sardines so much. All right, here is your chance to be on Meat Eater Trivia. You, the listeners. Backcountry Hunters and Anglers is auctioning off a seat in the room for a game of trivia. The winning bidder will get to choose a date in 2027 to compete against Yanni and Brody and Randall and the rest of the Meat Eater crew. Travel, lodging, and meals are not included. All proceeds go to BHA. To place your bid, go to backcountryhunters.org and check out their Forged and Found online auction. The bidding ends September 30th. And while you're there, check out their other auction blocks, such as a Turnpike Troubadours concert package, a hunting and fishing trip with Cal, a guided hunt in Hawaii, a Lifetime OnX Elite membership, custom taxidermy, and much more. Again, that's the Forged and Found online auction at backcountryhunters.org. All right, the Shelby Index for today is a three, so our winner should get six correct answers. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil.
00:06:56
Speaker 7: Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
00:06:59
Speaker 10: Everything.
00:07:01
Speaker 7: How's that?
00:07:02
Speaker 5: You stand to win everything.
00:07:12
Speaker 1: Question one, the topic is public lands, and this will be multiple choice. Which of these places is not managed by the National Park Service? Is it Gettysburg National Military Park, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur National Monument, or Pawnee National Grassland? So three of those places are managed by the National Park Service. One of them is... is not, which one is it? Gettysburg National Military Park, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur National Monument, or Pawnee National Grassland, which one is not managed by the National Park Service? Everyone in the room is just gonna be making a guess, no confidence. No quick answers for question one. Which of these places is not managed by the park service? Gettysburg National Military Park, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur National Monument, Pawnee National Grassland. This is a tough first question. Category of public lands. Seth's still writing. Seth, are you ready?
00:08:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, I changed my answer last minute.
00:08:46
Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Pawnee National Grassland. Logan and Sarah say Edgar Allan Poe. John says dinosaur. Jen, dinosaur. Alyssa, Gettysburg. The correct answer is Pawnee National Grassland. Just Seth. National military parks and national historic sites are managed by the National Park Service. National monuments are managed by a number of agencies, but mostly belong to the National Park Service, and national grasslands are managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Question two, the topic is cooking. This next great question is via Leland Hart. This seven-letter word is defined as, quote, A cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. This seven-letter word is defined as a cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. John and Logan and Seth all have their answers.
00:10:05
Speaker 6: Come on, Jen, you got it.
00:10:09
Speaker 1: John, tell us about killing that bull. Had a sweet video of it happening. How'd you film that? You just sat your phone up behind you?
00:10:14
Speaker 9: Well, no, I actually bought a 360 GoPro and I actually bought it like three weeks ago. I'm like, yeah, this is, this'll be a cool thing to kind of try out. And there's like a little remote that I attached to my wrist. So just press a button and it starts filming. And obviously 360 covers all angles.
00:10:32
Speaker 8: Yeah.
00:10:33
Speaker 9: Um, but I went out, it was a extremely rainy morning that morning and the mud going in was absolutely legendary. I almost got, I almost got stuck three different times, but got up onto a ridgeline. Didn't hear any bugles, uh, Um, so I just kind of like started covering drainage and got to a glassing knob glass down into a drainage and saw him, uh, way at the bottom, like 500 yards away, raking, uh, just a small little pine tree. And so I moved in and got to about like 150, 200 yards from him, threw out a couple of cow calls and he just came right to me from the time I called to when like I was drawn back. and it was probably 15 seconds. I mean, he came right in.
00:11:18
Speaker 6: That's cool.
00:11:20
Speaker 1: Great video. What's your Instagram handle that people can watch it?
00:11:23
Speaker 9: My Instagram is just my full name, John, J-O-N, Montresser, M-O-N-T-R-E-S-O-R, all lowercase and no space.
00:11:32
Speaker 1: And the way it played out, it looked like just a whitetail hunter waiting for a whitetail to walk by.
00:11:35
Speaker 9: That's pretty much what it was, honestly. Yeah, the wind was perfect direction. If I did let him go just a little bit more, He probably would have caught a whiff of me, but when I first saw him, it was at 40 yards, and he closed that into 25, and I was shooting downhill. My arrow did hit a bit high, and I knew I got one lung and some artery for sure, so he was going to die. So I backed out, got to my glassing knob, and then glassed him up dead in his bed 100 yards from where I shot him.
00:12:06
Speaker 1: Well done. Head into the Meteor store and give John a high five. All right, again, we're on question two. The seven letter word is defined as a cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says brisket, Logan brisket, Sarah brisket, John brisket, Jen without an answer, Alyssa without an answer. The correct answer is brisket. To learn how to cook a deer brisket, go check out Danielle Pruitt's article On TheMeatEater.com, called Balsamic Braised Venison, it is a perfect five-star rating. Ben304 noted it has the texture and taste of very good roast beef. AmosDean53 said it's his new favorite roast recipe, and C. Trimble compared it to eating at a fine dining restaurant. That's Danielle's balsamic braised venison recipe.
00:13:01
Speaker 5: So good.
00:13:02
Speaker 1: She specifically uses brisket.
00:13:06
Speaker 3: Is that the one with like all the red onions and balsamic vinegar? Have you seen the recipe?
00:13:12
Speaker 1: I probably have. I don't remember which one that is though.
00:13:14
Speaker 3: So good. I'm pretty sure I know the one they're talking about. I use that with bear. Phenomenal.
00:13:18
Speaker 1: We're on to question three. The topic is hunting. This next great question is via Daniel Steeman. Amos Slade sings, quote, I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man and I'd rather have a dog than a dollar. in this 1981 animated Disney movie? Jen's got this one.
00:13:39
Speaker 6: I got this one, I think.
00:13:39
Speaker 1: Disney movies. Amos Slade sings, I ain't got no job, I'm a hunting man, and I'd rather have a dog than a dollar in this 1981 animated Disney movie. Alyssa, do you have this one?
00:13:58
Speaker 8: I believe so.
00:13:59
Speaker 1: Sarah, do you have this one?
00:14:00
Speaker 2: I have a good guess.
00:14:02
Speaker 7: Okay.
00:14:03
Speaker 1: John, Seth, and Logan, not so sure though.
00:14:08
Speaker 5: Should have watched more Disney.
00:14:09
Speaker 3: Should have had kids earlier.
00:14:14
Speaker 1: Amos Slade.
00:14:15
Speaker 2: I don't know, I'm second guessing myself.
00:14:17
Speaker 1: I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And I'd rather have a dog than a dollar in this 1981 animated Disney movie. We might have a little performance from Phil the Engineer after this one. Seth, do you have a good answer?
00:14:38
Speaker 6: I don't know. I just threw one down that might make sense.
00:14:41
Speaker 1: John, you have an answer?
00:14:43
Speaker 6: I do.
00:14:43
Speaker 1: Logan, you good?
00:14:44
Speaker 7: Yep.
00:14:45
Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Fox and the Hound. Logan, 101 Dalmatians. Sarah, Fox and the Hound. John, Bambi. Jen, Fox and Hound. Alyssa, the Fox and the Hound. The correct answer is the Fox and the Hound. Well done, Ruth. Amos is the grumpy, gun-toting neighbor and antagonist of The Fox and the Hound. He becomes the big bad of the movie when he vows to kill a fox that he spots near his hen house. As Amos says in his song, he makes his living as a hunter and trapper. His only singing happens during the four-verse tune called A Huntin' Man. Here is Phil Taylor performing it. Take it away, Phil.
00:15:29
Speaker 8: I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man, and I'd rather have a dog than a dollar. So let's go banjo-ring-a-ling-a-ding-ho. Give a little hoot and a holler.
00:15:39
Speaker 7: Wow.
00:15:39
Speaker 1: Well done, Phil. Thanks, Phil. Thank you.
00:15:42
Speaker 6: I never do a remake. That was beautiful. 50 years later.
00:15:45
Speaker 8: It was the first movie that ever made me cry.
00:15:47
Speaker 3: Wow.
00:15:48
Speaker 6: It's a sad one.
00:15:50
Speaker 1: It's a sad one.
00:15:50
Speaker 2: I don't know.
00:15:51
Speaker 1: I don't recall anything about it. What part was so touching?
00:15:55
Speaker 8: I don't remember. I haven't watched it since I was nine years old and I cried.
00:15:58
Speaker 1: Wow. I didn't even know that when I asked you to sing a Mrs. Song. Well done, Phil. Question for the topic is gear. Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. That's it?
00:16:11
Speaker 2: That's it.
00:16:11
Speaker 1: That's the whole question.
00:16:13
Speaker 3: I was hoping for some more clues in there.
00:16:15
Speaker 1: That's all you get. Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. Seth, quick to answer. John, quick to answer.
00:16:25
Speaker 6: Couple PA boys.
00:16:29
Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
00:16:29
Speaker 6: We knew this one for sure.
00:16:31
Speaker 9: I have used this brand for a good majority of my life.
00:16:38
Speaker 1: Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986.
00:16:42
Speaker 6: Everyone had a sticker on their truck in high school.
00:16:47
Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
00:16:48
Speaker 5: Keep going. Is it bigger or smaller than a loaf of bread?
00:16:58
Speaker 1: How would that help you?
00:17:00
Speaker 6: John and I went to high schools that played each other in sports.
00:17:05
Speaker 1: Who was the better team?
00:17:06
Speaker 6: Bald Eagle. Yeah, his for sure.
00:17:09
Speaker 1: Seth's high school was the big brother and John's was the little brother.
00:17:12
Speaker 6: Pretty much. Absolutely.
00:17:16
Speaker 1: Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. We're on question four.
00:17:29
Speaker 3: No, it's a good guess though.
00:17:32
Speaker 1: We're using all the context that John and Seth.
00:17:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, do you ever repeat answers but change the question?
00:17:41
Speaker 1: I'm not going to give you any hints here.
00:17:44
Speaker 3: Answer that after though, because I'm curious if you just change the clue.
00:17:51
Speaker 1: Is everybody ready?
00:17:53
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:17:53
Speaker 1: Alyssa, do you have an answer?
00:17:54
Speaker 2: I have two, but I'm.
00:17:58
Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Realtree. Logan, LL Bean, Sarah without an answer. John, Realtree. Jen without an answer. Alyssa, Mossy Oak.
00:18:09
Speaker 5: Close.
00:18:09
Speaker 1: The correct answer is Realtree. Realtree started as one camo pattern that Bill Jordan made to mimic the bark of Realtrees. He then created the Realtree Outdoors TV show in the early 90s, which is credited for establishing the modern format hunting television it first aired on tnn the national network and then got a spot on espn in the early 2000s about to answer your question logan real tree it'd be hard not to talk about them more than once in like five years so real tree has been an answer before it's been talked about in the show before as has ll bean so uh it'll happen i run to question five the topic is wildlife This is our listener question of the week, which was won by David Beck for sending this great question. David is going to get a $ 150 First Light gift card. If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at themeateater.com. Black-capped, chestnut-backed, Carolina, mountain, and boreal are all types of this nine-letter songbird. Black-capped. chestnut-backed, Carolina, mountain, and boreal are all types of this nine-letter songbird. We will get a scoreboard update from Phil Taylor after this. Seth's got it. John, you got this one. Sarah, you got this one.
00:19:41
Speaker 2: Probably not.
00:19:41
Speaker 3: Okay.
00:19:42
Speaker 1: You got a nine-letter bird, though? Logan, do you have this one?
00:19:45
Speaker 3: I had an eight-letter bird, and then I made it a nine-letter bird. Which that doesn't say much, because my spelling's not the greatest.
00:19:53
Speaker 8: It's called thinking outside the box.
00:19:54
Speaker 6: Maybe.
00:19:55
Speaker 1: Black-capped, chestnut-backed, Carolina, mountain, and boreal are all types of this nine-letter song.
00:20:04
Speaker 8: You just awakened some sort of memory for me, Spencer, with that last question. Because when I used to work in TV, one of the shows I worked on, Realtree was like a sponsor.
00:20:15
Speaker 6: Oh, cool.
00:20:16
Speaker 8: And for years after I worked there, I would hear the guy reading it in my head. And it would, NRA All Access is brought to you by Bill Jordan's Realtree. And I forgot about it until today. And now I'm going to hear it in my sleep.
00:20:31
Speaker 6: What was the show?
00:20:32
Speaker 8: NRA All Access.
00:20:34
Speaker 3: Oh.
00:20:35
Speaker 1: I'm glad Phil got to edit NRA All Access.
00:20:38
Speaker 4: Me too.
00:20:38
Speaker 9: Good for him.
00:20:39
Speaker 1: All right. Is everybody ready with a nine-letter songbird? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth and Logan say Chickadee. Sarah says Blackbird. John, Chickadee. Jen without an answer. Alyssa, Blackbird. The correct answer is Chickadee. I'm sorry, Logan. We're going to give you the point, but your spelling was not even close. C-H-I-C-K-A-D-E-E. But we're going to give you the point. Nailed it. Because chickadees don't migrate, they need to rely on hidden caches of food during winter. To do this, they grow new brain cells in the fall that allow them to expand their memory. Chickadees are named after their distinct alarm call that sounds like they're saying chicka-dee-dee-dee. Play it, Phil.
00:21:38
Speaker 8: It's buffering, Spencer.
00:21:39
Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
00:21:42
Speaker 6: That's a great sound.
00:21:45
Speaker 1: Chicka-dee-dee-dee-dee. That's how they got their name. Now you know what that is when you're outside. All right, and now it's time for our DraftKings question of the week. Thanks to DraftKings, you get some bonus trivia in this week's episode. This does not count towards your score. It's just for bragging rights. Here's the question. The topic is hunting. Arkansas's biggest college is represented by this mascot, which is a nine-letter word for feral hog. Sarah had her answer before I finished the question. The room looks like they're gonna do well on this one. Arkansas's biggest college is represented by this mascot, which is a nine-letter word for feral hog. Just waiting on John down there to come up with his answer for the DraftKings question of the week.
00:22:45
Speaker 9: It's like, I don't know, for some reason, like, oh, wait, hang on a second.
00:22:51
Speaker 1: He's a Pennsylvania boy. He'll know this Arkansas stuff.
00:22:54
Speaker 2: Can this one count if I get it right?
00:22:57
Speaker 1: We'll see what Phil declares back there. We'll have a scoreboard update coming soon.
00:23:01
Speaker 6: I love how you just put it all on Phil.
00:23:04
Speaker 8: I'll take the heat.
00:23:05
Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We've got Seth and Logan and Sarah saying Razorback. John says the Arkansas Javelinas. Jen and Alyssa say Razorback. The correct answer is Razorback. 00:24:13
Speaker 1: All right, Phil. Let's get that scoreboard update before we do 6 through 10. Wow, Seth.
00:24:24
Speaker 3: Perfect game.
00:24:25
Speaker 8: I'm going to go backwards this time and say that Seth has got a perfect game.
00:24:28
Speaker 6: Five points.
00:24:28
Speaker 1: He hasn't even talked about it. Rarely does a perfect game make it to this point without someone letting us know they have.
00:24:33
Speaker 8: A perfect game. This is a group of modest, respectful human beings.
00:24:36
Speaker 6: I don't want to jinx myself.
00:24:38
Speaker 8: Not usually the case. Right behind Seth is John with three points, and we've got Logan and Sarah with two. Jen and Alyssa have one.
00:24:47
Speaker 1: Question six. The topic is fishing. This TV show holds the Discovery Channel record for their longest running series of all time. Seth looks like he's going to be six for six. His whiteboard is down. The topic is fishing. This TV show holds the Discovery Channel record for their longest running series of all time. Sarah, Jen, and John now locking in their answers. Logan doesn't watch enough Discovery Channel.
00:25:29
Speaker 3: When I first read that question, I thought it was Disney Channel.
00:25:32
Speaker 8: I was like, why is it?
00:25:33
Speaker 1: The second Disney Channel question.
00:25:35
Speaker 8: Well, I think.
00:25:37
Speaker 1: Discovery is owned by Disney, right? Okay, yes. This is our second Disney question.
00:25:41
Speaker 3: I read it as Disney for some reason, and I was like, what, dude?
00:25:44
Speaker 1: This TV show holds the Discovery Channel record for their longest running series of all time. This is question six. The topic is fishing. Alyssa now coming up with an answer. John, we need you to keep pace with Seth here. Make this an interesting game.
00:26:05
Speaker 6: I'm going to try.
00:26:07
Speaker 9: I'm going to try.
00:26:07
Speaker 2: I think so.
00:26:08
Speaker 5: Okay.
00:26:08
Speaker 7: Yeah.
00:26:10
Speaker 1: And wait for Alyssa to finish writing and then flip over the whiteboard.
00:26:13
Speaker 8: I think Discovery is actually Warner Brothers because it's a part of that whole HBO when they added like a bunch of TV, like HBO or Discovery shows to HBO.
00:26:22
Speaker 6: So change your answer, Alyssa.
00:26:24
Speaker 1: No. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says deadliest catch. Logan, planet life. Sarah, deadliest catch. John, river monsters. Jen, deadliest catch. Alyssa Crocodile Hunter. The correct answer is Deadliest Catch. Deadliest Catch started in 2005 and aired their 22nd season earlier this year. The show follows commercial crab fishermen working in the Bering Sea. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, commercial fishing has the highest occupational fatality rate in America. On the show's pilot, They say that it averages out to one death per week during peak crabbing season with an injury rate that's close to 100%. Question seven, the topic is conservation. This next great question is via Austin White. How many colors are on the fire danger today sign? Is this the Austin White that used to work here? I don't think it's that Austin White. I'm... They didn't tell me otherwise. We can pretend it is. I don't know. How many colors are on the fire danger today sign? Seth Forestry boy over here came up with an answer real quick.
00:27:48
Speaker 6: Now I'm like.
00:27:52
Speaker 5: Staring at the sign in my head.
00:27:57
Speaker 1: How many colors are on the fire danger today sign?
00:28:07
Speaker 6: We've all seen it. It's hard to not see it in this state.
00:28:13
Speaker 1: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says four. Logan, four. Sarah, four. John, three. Jen, four. Alyssa, three. The correct answer is none of those. It's five. Show us the picture, Phil. From left to right, it is green as low, blue as moderate, yellow as high, orange as very high, and red as extreme. You can buy your own sign from SmokeyZone.com with a one-sided version costing $ 700 and a two-sided version that features a six-foot Smokey costing $ 3, 000. Wow. If I had F you money, I'd have multiple of those Smokey Bear.
00:29:01
Speaker 8: Signs at my place.
00:29:03
Speaker 2: Did everybody forget about the blue?
00:29:05
Speaker 7: Yeah. Okay.
00:29:07
Speaker 1: Low, moderate, high, very high, extreme. Dang it, Seth.
00:29:12
Speaker 6: Yeah, I know.
00:29:12
Speaker 1: Lost the $ 1, 000 donation. We're on to question eight. The topic is public lands. What does OHV stand for? As in an OHV trail. What does OHV stand for? as in an O-H-V trail. The room is stumped. Seth has now come up with an answer and he's the only one. What does O H V stand for? This is question eight. We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil after this. Could be back-to-back zero percenters. Seth, how do you feel about your answer?
00:30:09
Speaker 6: Not great.
00:30:10
Speaker 1: O-H-V.
00:30:13
Speaker 3: While we're trying to answer this trivia question, what does PA system stand for?
00:30:17
Speaker 1: I have no idea.
00:30:21
Speaker 6: I just recently learned this.
00:30:22
Speaker 1: Public announcement?
00:30:24
Speaker 3: Public address. At least that's what the internet told me.
00:30:29
Speaker 1: I believe you. Why were you Googling that?
00:30:32
Speaker 3: It's just one of those things that you think about, but you never actually know what the acronym stands for. Like this, I've seen that in so many places, but I've never actually had to think about what it meant.
00:30:42
Speaker 1: Someone told me the other day that Wi-Fi doesn't stand for anything either. It's just Wi-Fi. I haven't checked in on that. For now, we're trying to solve OHV, as in an OHV trail. The room. The room is stumped. Does everybody give up? O-H-V. Seth now going in for a change. Is everybody ready? John doing some last second scribbling. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says on highway vehicle. Logan, only high vehicles. Sarah, off-road Humvee vehicle. John, off-road hauling vehicle. Jen without an answer. Alyssa without an answer. The correct answer is off. Highway vehicle. Nobody got it. Seth was two letters off of being right. He had on highway vehicle. It's off highway vehicle, just the opposite. An OHV is any motorized land vehicle that's predominantly used for recreational purposes on unimproved trails. Examples are ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and dune buggies. Utah has the most OHV trails with more than 80,000 miles worth. All right, we're on to question nine, but we're going to get a scoreboard update from Phil first.
00:32:21
Speaker 2: Great.
00:32:24
Speaker 8: Pretty similar spread from the last check-in. Seth's now got six points. Sarah and John are tied behind him with three. Logan and Jen with two, and Alyssa with one.
00:32:34
Speaker 1: That means Seth has already wrapped up the victory.
00:32:38
Speaker 6: Pressure's off.
00:32:38
Speaker 1: We're on question nine. The topic is woodsmanship. The CDC says that one of the most common symptoms of a tick bite is a circular rash that looks like this eight-letter word. Sarah's got this one. John and Seth, they like their answers too. The CDC says that one of the most common symptoms of a tick bite is is a circular rash that looks like this eight-letter word. Jen, do you have this one right?
00:33:12
Speaker 2: Feeling kind of confident. We'll see.
00:33:14
Speaker 1: Has anybody had a circular rash before that looks like this thing? Okay. You PA boys, you somehow got out of the state without getting a tick bite.
00:33:26
Speaker 6: Oh, I've had plenty of those.
00:33:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, I've had them on me. Just not the wrong tick bite. Right.
00:33:31
Speaker 6: Honestly, back in the day, I would never even look for something like that. I can just pull ticks out of myself left and right and just think it was just another Tuesday.
00:33:38
Speaker 1: You know? The CDC says that one of the most common symptoms of a tick bite is a circular rash that looks like this eight-letter word.
00:33:48
Speaker 5: Is it all tick bites or just certain types of ticks?
00:33:51
Speaker 1: I don't have the answer to that.
00:33:53
Speaker 5: I have it linked to a very specific kind of tick.
00:33:57
Speaker 6: Like a deer tick?
00:33:58
Speaker 1: Yeah. I feel like some spider bites can throw a similar look as this, but I think a lot of people just associate.
00:34:05
Speaker 3: Them with ticks.
00:34:07
Speaker 5: I've heard them specifically connected to deer ticks.
00:34:09
Speaker 7: I know.
00:34:09
Speaker 2: I feel like I don't know if now I'm correct.
00:34:12
Speaker 1: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Set says bullseye. Logan without an answer. Sarah, bullseye. John, ringworm. Jen, ringworm. Alyssa, ringworm. The correct answer is bullseye. A bullseye-like rash occurs on 70% of people who get Lyme disease. The rash typically shows up between 3 and 30 days after a bite occurs, and while it can be warm to the touch, it's rarely itchy or painful. The unique circular pattern is a result of your body's inflammatory reaction to the moving bacteria. This represents the active battlefront where your immune system is fighting off Lyme disease. All right, Phil, let's get one more scoreboard update before question 10.
00:35:03
Speaker 8: Like we discussed, Seth's got it locked up now. Sarah's got four points. Keeping up behind him.
00:35:09
Speaker 1: Seth could just double the correct answers of second place. We'll see how he does. Here's a correct answer review. One was Pawnee National Grassland. Two, Brisket. Three, The Fox and the Hound. Four, Realtree. Five, Chickadee. Six, Deadliest Catch. Seven was five colors, eight off-highway vehicle, nine bullseye. Here's question 10. The topic is hunting. This rhyming term refers to the spot on an elk's rack where the final tine branches away from the tip of the main beam.
00:35:47
Speaker 10: Yeah, Alyssa.
00:35:48
Speaker 1: Alyssa's got it. John's got it. Seth's got it. This rhyming term refers to the spot on an elk's rack where the final tine branches away from the tip of the main beam. John, does yours rhyme?
00:36:10
Speaker 6: Yes.
00:36:11
Speaker 1: Okay, Seth, does yours rhyme? Yeah. Alyssa, does yours rhyme? No. No, she says.
00:36:18
Speaker 2: Kind of.
00:36:20
Speaker 1: You say it with an accent, maybe? This rhyming term. refers to the spot on an elk's rack where the final tine branches away from the tip of the main beam. Logan, big elk hunter over there. Do you have this one right?
00:36:41
Speaker 3: No, but I don't think about rack scoring or size as much. I've yet to kill a bull elk, so maybe once I do, I'll be able to answer this question more appropriately.
00:36:51
Speaker 6: Big B-tag guy.
00:36:53
Speaker 10: Yeah.
00:36:53
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:36:54
Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
00:36:55
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:36:56
Speaker 3: Pretty stoked to have B tag.
00:36:58
Speaker 7: Cool.
00:36:59
Speaker 1: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says whale tail. Logan, Brow, Sarah without an answer. John, whale tail. Jen without an answer. Alyssa without an answer. The correct answer is whale tail. The name refers to the Y shape these points create that resemble the fluked end of a whale's tail. Whale tail size is a good indicator of bull maturity. Boone and Crockett says that's an elk's fourth point. Boone and Crockett says that an elk's fourth point, which would come below the whale tail on a six by six, is almost always the longest tine. This tine is referred to as the dagger, sword, or royal tine. We're looking at a picture here of what would be an elk's whale tail. That's the bull that John shot a.
00:37:50
Speaker 6: Couple weeks ago.
00:37:52
Speaker 7: Oh, I wish.
00:37:52
Speaker 1: Good Lord. All right, Seth is today's big winner. He got eight correct answers, and I did think he doubled up second place. Well done, Seth. Seth, what are you going to do with that $ 500 donation?
00:38:06
Speaker 6: So there's a Bassmaster Elite Series angler, Carl Jacobson. He's been on the podcast before. He started a nonprofit called Fear My Heart, and they organized these giant river and stream and lake Okay. Where, you know, they get a bunch of people together, and it's actually, like, worldwide. Like, he does these days where it's like, you know, he organizes a big cleanup, spreads the word, and, like, a lot of people in the U.S. get involved, other countries, and they go and clean up their local water bodies.
00:38:41
Speaker 1: Good place to send that $ 500.
00:38:43
Speaker 6: It's going there.
00:38:44
Speaker 1: And that'll be a new organization. I always like that. One more time, what's it called, Seth?
00:38:47
Speaker 6: Fear My Heart.
00:38:48
Speaker 1: Fear My Heart. Well done, Seth.
00:38:49
Speaker 2: $ 500 going there.
00:38:52
Speaker 1: All right, join us next week for more Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins.
00:38:57
Speaker 10: Yeah, Spencer from South Dakota, he's the host. Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays them questions down. And he likes taking those two- and three-year-old bucks. And he's an avid amateur.
00:39:17
Speaker 1: Rock hound.
